For those of you who list on eBay using the featured first upgrade, eBay have yet again changed the game and as of June 29 2010 eBay will be discontinuing this feature and you will no longer be able to simply buy your first place position in eBay’s best match search.
Instead, eBay have proposed that sellers use eBay’s pay per click program adcommerce. If you sign upto add commerce your adcommerce ads will be displayed above or below the main search display area. I have noticed eBay are currently testing this and move ads around a bit to supposedly test the best area for the new adcommerce ads.
You’ll find by using adcommerce you will be charged every time a browser clicks on your adcommerce ad. Will this really replace the benefits of featured first for sellers or is it another ploy to drip more money from your bank account into eBay’s? Only time will tell and eventually I predict adcommerce will have been extensively tested enough to replace featured first but that could take time..

Hi John, I think that eBay are aiming more and more at the commercial areas rather than the little guys and girls at home. It seems that eBay are always trying to squeeze the smaller sellers out of the game.
Last year only 30% of sales on eBay were auction items. With eBay now adding their own form of PPC its just another step towards a squeeze on the little seller.
Thanks for letting us know.
Regards, Barry
Hi Barry,
I agree with you about eBay getting harder and harder for the smaller guys to claim their patch of virtual real estate on eBay. That’s why I’ve always said it’s better to sell popular products no one else can sell except the seller unless that seller opens up his or her products to sell at wholesale to others.
Thanks again for your comment.
Whilst I agree with you that ebay seem to bring in new rules that make things harder and harder for smaller businesses to survive on thereI imagine that you cannot guarantee being at the top of the page as if 75% paid for the ‘first page’ option then there would be too many to get everyone on there. I never pay ebay any extra for anything extra, they get enough out of me already, and I take my chances.
Great post, John, thanks.
Enjoy the journey.
Mandy
That’s right Mandy, it’s better to think your way ahead with smart strategies rather than pay more.
Thanks for the comment Mandy.
Hey John,
Its a damn shame about that, I used to use “Featured First”, for my private label products, it was the best high visibility format eBay had for these kind of products!
This was because non branded items where not keyword search friendly, they are not pre sold product like the high street brands!
However, you can use adcommerce strategicly to get your name known on the eBay map, and once you have done that, you can if you want save money on adcommerce and frontload your title with your brand and product name!
This will blast you to the top of the search results for “best match”, and thats because eBays PPC has made you a pre sold name on their search engine!
Cheers for your post content john, the sheer quality made me burst into eBay song….Ed.
There’s definitely a use for adcommerce ED
Thanks for the comment

Hi John,
I purchased your private label manual, but have lost the password, can you email me, and I can send you the receipt/transaction id etc. Sorry posting on here, but can not find a ‘contact me’ page.
